Whangamata Classic grows to two-day event

The growth of the popular Whangamata Classic has seen the annual carnival extended into a two-day event.

Jointly hosted by Surf Life Saving Northern Region and SLSNZ Eastern Region, this weekend's Whangamata Classic is set to bring some of the country's best to compete, including a large number of High Performance athletes.

There are over 500 competitors entered from 21 different Surf Life Saving Clubs around the country who will take on events including beach flags, sprints, board, ski, iron/diamond, taplin, surf race, surf boats and canoes.

Formerly the largest single-day surf lifesaving carnival, this year sees the addition of team events to the programme which has extended the event into another half day of competition on Sunday.

Two of the World Champion Black Fins, Olivia Eaton and Laura Quilter, will be taking part along with Junior Black Fins Javon McCallum, Alaynah Bettany, Olivia Corrin, Daniel Barron and Libby Bradley.

While participation numbers are down slightly on last year, there is a large field of athletes entered in the Under 16 and Under 19 age categories.

Racing begins at 9am on Saturday with the beach sprints, surf race and surf boats.
