Building your child’s skills and confidence in the water
City Nippers is an exciting programme returning to Auckland beaches this summer. 6 - 12 year old Children get to experience what it takes to be a Surf Lifeguard, learning beach and water safety skills, in a fun and safe environment. The programmes consist of 1 ½ hr sessions over a six week period (or five 2 hour sessions in the holidays) that introduces them to the open water environment and builds their confidence in the sea.
Children are split into three groups that will rotate through the different activities:
-
Group 1: 6-7 year olds
-
Group 2: 8-9 year olds
-
Group 3: 10–12 year olds
City Nippers is held at Takapuna Beach and St Heliers in Auckland.
Parents' Info
City Nippers allows parents to either stay and watch their children enjoy the programme, or drop them off and pick them up at the end of the session. Our Surf Lifeguard Instructors are very well qualified and are happy to look after your children during the session if you need to head off.
At the beginning of the first session, a role call will be taken, and each child will recieve their registration pack. Children are asked to bring their beanie to each session from there on in, to enable each age group to be identified.
Location and Parking
Takapuna Beach City Nippers is run at The Strand entrance to the beach (close to the public toilets). Parking is available for free at the Boat Ramp car park at the Northern end of the beach, or pay and display parking is available along The Strand.
St Heliers City Nippers is run next to the playground at the Cliff Road end of the beach. Parking is available along Vale Road, Cliff Road, and the surrounding streets.
What to wear
Kids will need to wear their togs, and will be provided with a City Nippers rash top. They may want to wear some clothing over the top to start with, as they will begin with the theory session and beach games. Children can also wear a wetsuit if they feel the cold.
Children at St Heliers may like to wear reef shoes (available at the Warehouse), as the beach does have a lot of shells.
What to bring
- A towel
- A change of clothes (including something warm)
- A water bottle
- Snacks for afterwards (eg fruit, muesli bar)
- Sunscreen
