Non-profit, volunteer based organisation
Surf Life Saving Northern Region is committed to the prevention of drowning and injury in an aquatic environment. We provide lifeguarding, water safety and education services to all our northern beaches and get a lot of satisfaction from playing such a vital role in our community.
We are a non-profit, volunteer based organisation and have been in operation since 1933. Since then, we have become a well respected life force in the community, largely because of the professionalism and commitment from our lifeguards and the many support structures in place to support our core activities.

History of Surf Life Saving Northern Region
Surf Life Saving Northern Region is committed to the prevention of drowning and injury in our aquatic environment through the provision of lifeguarding, water safety and education services. Founded in 1933, our volunteer lifeguard patrols have become entrenched in the fabric of New Zealand Culture.
The earliest District Life Saving Association to be formed was Canterbury, which commenced operations in February 1917. Other district associations were formed later. In 1932, Wellington, and Taranaki were set up and Otago and Auckland were established in 1933.
Surf Life Saving New Zealand was formed in 1934 and in so doing became independent of the Royal Life Saving Society, although it still maintained strong ties with its parent organisation for some years. Since 1934 Surf Life Saving has run its own National Championships and new clubs and associations continued to be formed. |
